WHAT TO WEAR FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS THE GREAT MYSTERY
From what I have seen, most families here in the Pocatello, Blackfoot and Idaho Falls area have their family images taken, on average, every five to ten years. For most families having their family portraits taken is definitely not an annual occurrence. This means your family images are not going to change often and will be hanging in your home for a long time. Of all the questions my clients have about their session "what to wear" is by far the number one concern of my clients. Today I'm going to give you a few tips to help ease the pain of your family portrait session!!
FIGHT THE TREND
Life moves fast and so do the styles and trends of the times. Every year there is a new color, piece of clothing or hairstyle that's all the rage. When you are choosing what to wear for your family images I would caution you about jumping on the latest trends of the moment. When my clients come into the studio for their pre-session consult, I tell them to keep it classic and simple. We go over options and I show my clients colors and styles that are always in fashion. The most important tip I have for my clients is to make sure they wear clothes that will not date the image in the next few years.
COLORS
One of the other common questions I get is "what colors should we wear?" At the studio we try to pair your colors with locations and the season. I'm huge on harmony in my images. I've found color pallet is one of the best way to create an image that is easy to look at. Another thing to remember when it comes to your color choices is, in the end the image are about you and your family. When people look at your family images they should see your family first and not the clothes you are wearing.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Another thing I strongly advise against wearing are patterns and especially multi-colored patterns. It is very easy to lose your family in your images if you are wearing something crazy. If you are shooting on a solid color background like white or grey, then you could make patterns work a little better, but if you are shooting outside where there are many textures, shapes, and tones then patterns are a horrible choice. I highly advise wearing solids. If you are scared of everyone looking alike if your wear solids you can change things up with fabric textures and tones of the main color.

Here is the number one tip to any family, in the Pocatello, Blackfoot or Idaho Falls area, who are going to have their family portraits taken: BE YOU!!! If you are a fancy family be fancy. If you are a casual family be casual. If your are a jeans and t-shirt family wear them. Wash them and put an iron to them, but be you! In the end your family portraits are your record of what you have built, what you have been though and who you are as a family. Most importantly, your family portraits should be BADASS pictures of the humans you love most in this world.
